VOA news

Uyghur Christian Faces Possible Execution for ‘Subversion of National Government’

MEDIA ADVISORY, April 9 /Christian Newswire

China Aid Association has learned that Mr. Alimujiang Yimiti, a Uyghur Christian and father of two, may soon face execution. Officials charged Alimujiang last September with “illegal religious activities” and took him into custody this January, accusing him of “Subversion of the National Government and endangering national security,” a crime punishable by death. Officials are expected to announce Alimujiang’s sentence by the end of April. Charges such as committing crimes against the State or revealing State secrets are commonly leveled against anyone considered to be an enemy of the State. Alimujiang’s family fears he will be found guilty of such crimes and subjected to capital punishment.

Alimujiang is neither a separatist nor a terrorist, local sources say. He has told officials many times during interrogation that as a Christian he loves and supports the Chinese government, something many young Uyghurs struggle with as Han Chinese culture becomes increasingly dominant in Xinjiang. As a loyal Chinese citizen and business entrepreneur, Alimujiang has held to high standards, paying his taxes faithfully and avoiding a common local custom of paying bribes for business favors. He has also done his best to assimilate into Chinese culture, making the unusual decision to send his children to a Chinese language school in a predominantly Uyghur area.

Friends say Alimujiang simply wants the freedom to quietly express his faith, a right guaranteed to him in the Chinese constitution. Currently however, it is illegal for Alimujiang to own a Uyghur Bible. He is also unable to attend services at any Three Self Church in Xinjiang due to articles in the Xinjiang constitution that contradict China’s national constitution. Neither can he pray with foreign Christians.

Simple Faith a Crime?

Alimujiang, who comes from a Muslim background, converted to Christianity over ten years ago and became active among the growing Uyghur church.

In 1997 an American-owned company, the Xinjiang Taipingyang Nongye Gongsi, employed Alimujiang as an interpreter because of his firm grasp of Chinese, English and Uyghur. Appreciative of his unique linguistic and technical skills, the company later offered him a full-time job at their premises in Hetian. While no religious activities were permitted during working hours, the company allowed Alimujiang and other staff members - whether Muslim, Christian or otherwise - to pursue their own religious beliefs without interference – in contrast to government companies. State officials also searched his house regularly and seized his personal computer. Alimujiang made numerous complaints to the State Security Bureau headquarters in Urumqi, the provincial capital. He also documented bruises from rough treatment and brought this to the attention of the bureau. Eventually Alimujiang left the company in Hetian and moved back to Urumqi, where he was hired as project manager for the Xinjiang Jiaerhao Foodstuff Company.

During his employment with the American-owned company and subsequently the UK-owned Xinjiang Jiaerhao Foodstuff Company, the local State Security Bureau – responsible for matters of national security - regularly called Alimujiang in for interrogation. Day or night, he was expected to comply. Officials however forbade him to discuss the subject of these interrogations with anyone, as this would be equivalent to “leaking state secrets.”

In late February of this year Mr. Zhang Kai Alimujiang’s lawyer, traveled to Kashi from Beijing but was denied a meeting with him by the Bureau of State Security of Xinjiang on Feb 25 for a so-called “national secret” reason. Alimujiang is currently being held in Kashi detention center.

His arrest, totally unexpected, has shocked friends and family who describe Alimujiang as an honest businessman and loyal citizen of China. Two companies of Alimujiang’ s former employment were closed due to suspicion of “foreign religious infiltration.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Moments after its started on its relay here, the Olympic torch disappeared.

The first flame-bearer left the podium near this city’s waterfront and, surrounded by security, dashed into a massive pier-side building less than 300 feet away, leaving stunned onlookers shaking their heads.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the torch will be carried by boat, not along the Embarcadero as planned. About 1:30 p.m., a police boat pulled up to the dock, surrounded by officers on jet skis.

The sudden turn of events came after a ceremony in which Norman Bellingham, the CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee — a former Olympian and kayaker — welcomed the torch to San Francisco in a speech that started well after the 1 p.m. projected torch launch time.

The torch carrier then ran from the podium, passed a statue of former San Francisco Giant Willie McCovey, and disappeared.

In the hour before the relay began, face-offs between protesters and Chinese loyalists were becoming increasingly frequent with less than an hour before the scheduled start of the latest leg of the contentious torch relay leading up to the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Not far from the city’s picturesque Ferry Building clock tower at the foot of Market Street, the end point of the relay, the tension was building.

“You are a big fat liar,” Andrew Kwok, a native of Hong Kong and a Fremont, Calif., software engineer, yelled at Matt Laubcher, 37, an electrician from Reno, who was wearing a Tibetan flag on his back, decrying what he called the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

After police separated the two men, Kwok said: “They’re trying to hijack the agenda. We should give our hate, our differences way, and enjoy the games.”

Nearby, in the shadow of the Bay Bridge, about 100 protesters surged from the roadside along the city’s Embarcadero and surrounded a bus. The crowd began beating on the sides of the vehicle and broke its rear-view mirror before a police officer on a motorcycle announced over a megaphone: “We dropped people off at McCovey Cove. This bus is empty!”

Someone from the crowd yelled: “This is a decoy!” and the protesters moved on.

On the bay, police on marked jet-skis cruised the waterfront near the start of the relay in McCovey Cove, next to AT&T Park, where the San Francisco Giants baseball team plays.

The San Francisco leg of the torch relay — its only North American stop — comes after violent protests in London and Paris. In Paris, security officials halted the event and ushered the torch onto a bus. That decision came after swarms of protesters forced officials to repeatedly extinguish the iconic flame.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom toured the relay start site at 9 a.m. to encourage the scores of black-unformed police. He was accompanied by Rose Pak, president of the pro-Beijing Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

Hours before the start of the relay, pro-China activists waved hundreds of red flags of the Peoples’ Republic of China. Many carried signs that read “Go China. Go Olympics.” Others performed traditional Chinese dances.

Chen Zheng, a graduate student at Stanford University, said she was one of 200 students who arrived at 7 a.m.

“We want to occupy the good spots,” she said. “We’re Chinese. We’re here to cheer on the torch.”

Unlike London and Paris, San Francisco is home to 30,000 Chinese Americans, many of them loyal to Beijing. Police worried there might be face-offs with protesters. But Zheng said she hoped there would be minimal conflicts.

“It’s just a torch, why try to put it out?” she asked. “This is a celebration. Be happy, Why ruin things?”

Along with groups supporting Tibet and criticizing China’s religious and political crackdowns, those expected to protest today include the animal-rights group In Defense of Animals, which alleges that China kills cats and dogs for their fur, and possibly one or more of the scheduled torch bearers.

Some people signed up for a “Naked Torch Run” scheduled for just before the official event.

And there was humor along the way. One man carried a sign that read: “Another organic chef for a free Tibet.” Another held up a placard that read: “Legalize gambling, Free To Bet.”

Burmese groups, monks and Buddhist clergy carrying signs paraded across the pedestrian walkway of the Golden Gate Bridge this morning. There were no arrests and the march went peacefully.

“It’s going perfectly. There’s not a problem at all,” said Marry Currie, a spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco police have said they expect as many as 6,500 protesters today, but the numbers could grow higher. An organizer for the Coalition to Save Darfur — one of numerous groups planning to be out in force in the city — said Tuesday that the group had already rallied 2,100 supporters, double original estimates.

Police in San Francisco, where all 2,000 of its officers are on duty today, said they will use tactics employed in London and Paris to provide a human shield around the 80 Olympic torch carriers to discourage anyone from trying to reach out and snuff the flame.

At least one Bay Area torchbearer has dropped out of the event, citing safety concerns, officials say.

The planned route for the six-mile relay traces San Francisco’s picturesque waterfront, but Mayor Gavin Newsom reiterated Tuesday that he might change the route even after the 1 p.m. start time in order to thwart trouble.

San Francisco police have sought backup from the California Highway Patrol, U.S. Secret Service and neighboring police agencies.

The FBI will also be ready to join in the security effort but a spokeswoman said that agents would not engage in surveillance of protesters. The Federal Aviation Administration said that temporary flight restrictions for private aircraft would be in effect in airspace over the torch relay route.

On the ground, police will ride bicycles and motorcycles to keep an eye on activists on the fringes of the event. The torch will be further protected by officers running alongside the torchbearers.

In London, protesters were outraged at the sight of Chinese security officials surrounding the flame San Francisco officials said those same torch-minders might be on hand today, but that police were in charge.

The flame embarked in March from Greece on an 85,000-mile, six-continent journey — one of the most ambitious torch relays in the history of the Olympics.

It has also proven to be among the most contentious, despite China’s slogan: “Journey of Harmony.”

Although top Olympic officials said Tuesday that they would discuss stopping the remainder of the relay at a Friday meeting, Beijing officials insisted that there would be no route changes after the flame leaves San Francisco.

“No force will disrupt the torch relay,” said Sun Weide, a spokesman for the Beijing organizing committee.

Chinese Americans in San Francisco echoed those sentiments Tuesday, saying they would cheer the torch today in the face of protest. Organizers said they expected more than 15,000 to wave banners in support of Beijing.

“We’re going to show the world that San Francisco stands behind China,” social worker Citania Tam said as she walked in Chinatown. “We’re going to be the anti-demonstrators.”

Newsom said he expected “tens of thousands” to witness the event. He met with protesters Tuesday and advised them to not threaten the torch: “Nothing gets in the way of a movement more than doing something to take you away from your message. . . . I am not over-promising that this is the Summer of Love. [People] can peacefully disagree.”

Still, San Francisco officials said they have no regrets about beating out Seattle last year in a bid to become the only North American city to welcome the torch. In a recent speech before journalists in Sacramento, Newsom, referring to San Francisco’s torch relay, quipped, “Be careful what you wish for.”

Mayoral spokesman Nathan Ballard said San Francisco was chosen for its status as a Pacific Rim city and home to thousands of Chinese Americans. “We knew from Day One there would be protests and that we would have to accommodate that,” he said. “This is a free country.”

Thousands of protesters converged on San Francisco today as rival demonstrations faced off just hours before the scheduled start of the torch relay with pro-Chinese demonstrators shouting “Lies! Lies!” at Tibetan activists.

In Ferry Park, bordering the torch’s intended route, hundreds of Tibetan activists gathered to prepare for what many hoped would be a day of peaceful protest against the Olympic flame. Just yards away, a rally of supporters of the Chinese Olympics watched a mass display of Tai-Chi.

Officials estimated that at least 6,000 protesters would line the 6-mile route along the city’s waterfront, while a pro-Chinese business group said it had printed 10,000 T-shirts which it expected to hand out during the day.

The latest protests involving the torch came as President George Bush left open the possibility that he might not attend the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Games - something that would inevitably be seen as a snub to China.

Bush, who has promised to raise the issue of human rights with China, has accepted an invitation from his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, to attend the ceremony.

But asked today whether the president would be going, White House press secretary Dana Perino demurred, citing the fluid nature of a foreign trip. “It is extremely premature for me to say what the president’s schedule is going to be” in August, she said.

In San Francisco city and police officials, after consulting with police in London and Paris, said that they had opted for a three-tier layer of protection for the torch and the 79 runners taking part in the relay.

Police on foot would be surrounded by a cordon of police on bicycles, who in turn would be ringed by motorcycle police. No mention was made of the blue-tracksuited Chinese security personnel whose presence caused such a furore in Europe.

Elements of the police strategy to contain protest during the torch relay emerged during the morning. Police said they would arrest anyone who breached the metal barriers lining the route, with officers stationed every 8-10 feet.

But the reality was different, as reports emerged of protesters from both sides crossing the road to intimidate the other side.

One 18-year-old Tibetan man was arrested after a stand-off near the start of the route. A police van was subsequently surrounded by demonstrators, who argued that his detention was unfair. Officers reportedly drew their batons to push the demonstrators away.

A no-fly zone was in force over the city, boats were standing by on the waterfront to take the torch should a sit-down protest block the route, and mayor Gavin Newsome told reporters that a last-minute change to the planned route was more likely than not.

The day’s events started with Burmese monks clad in red robes marching across the Golden Gate bridge, originally part of the route for the torch relay.

Soon after, rallies demonstrating against China’s policies in Tibet and Darfur began close to the torch’s waterfront route.

Peter Chen, clutching a cardboard Olympic flag, said he had decided to come to the display after seeing the unruly scenes in Paris and London.

“I saw the protests and it made me angry,” he said. “People can express their point of view but not in a violent way. I hope people will look at the bigger picture, There is much more freedom in China than there was 20 years ago,” he said.

In Ferry Park Tenzin Subhar, whose parents fled Tibet for India before moving to the US 15 years ago, said that she had come to draw attention to the human rights abuses perpetrated by China in Tibet.

“The protests so far have been great,” she said, holding a placard bearing the symbol of the Olympic rings in the form of handcuffs. “I’m very thankful. The people in Tibet need to know that they are being listened to.”

Around her, the red, blue and yellow Tibetan flag fluttered in the wind as groups of marchers prepared to disperse along the route.

Tagudh Youngdoung, one of the organisers of the Free Tibet Team, said that the events in Tibet in March had acted as a “spark in the forest”.

“We want maximum exposure here today,” he said.

“We are not against the Olympics or the torch bearers. But sometimes you have to push a little. Just chanting and holding prayer vigils, the world has become tired of that, and perhaps if you push people will look a little further into what is going on.”

The eve of the relay was marked by a rally for Tibet attended by actor Richard Gere and archbishop Desmond Tutu. Thousands listened as Tutu compared the repression in Tibet to the apartheid era in South Africa.

“Thank you for continuing that tremendous tradition to stand for freedom,” he said. “We want to tell the dictators and the oppressors of this world, hey, you have already lost.”

Earlier the city’s police chief, Heather Fong, said that she had watched events in Paris and London with alarm. “What is most important is at the end of the day the people are peaceful and safe and it’s a successful situation,” Fong said. “If there’s violence and people get hurt, then it hurts every opinion that is out there.”

With organisers admitting that they were taken by surprise on Monday when three pro-Tibet activists unfurled banners on the Golden Gate bridge, the group behind that action promised another high-profile stunt for today.

After San Francisco, the only US city to host the torch, it is due to travel to Argentina for the next leg of the Journey of Harmony.

Although the International Olympic Committee’s executive board has scheduled a meeting for the end of the week to discuss the tour and the protests it has attracted, officials insisted there were no plans to scrap the tour.

In China, government officials warned against attempts to disrupt the torch as it travels through Tibet on the most controversial leg of the tour.

“If someone dares to sabotage the torch relay in Tibet and its scaling of Mount Everest, we will seriously punish him and will not be soft-handed,” said Qiangba Puncog, governor of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, at a press conference in Beijing.

“For these separatist forces, the Olympics in Beijing will be a rare opportunity. Therefore they wish to create major troubles or incidents. I don’t doubt they will create trouble during the torch relay in Tibet.”
